A school leave letter is a formal note from a parent or guardian to the school requesting permission for a child to be absent, or explaining an absence that has already occurred. It matters because schools monitor pupil attendance and unexplained absences can affect a pupil's disciplinary record.
In Malaysia, both government and private schools generally accept a letter from parents for short absences such as illness, family matters, bereavement, hospital appointments or unavoidable travel. For sick leave, attach the medical certificate from the clinic if you have one. For longer absences, some schools require the request to be addressed to the Headmaster or Principal and approved in advance.
A good school leave letter states the pupil's full name, class or form, the date or period of absence, a clear and brief reason, and the name and phone number of the parent or guardian for follow-up. Address it to the class teacher or the Headmaster according to the school's practice, and hand it in as early as possible, ideally before the absence or on the first day the child returns to school.
