A job application letter, also called a cover letter, is a formal letter sent together with your resume to apply for an advertised position or to introduce yourself to an organisation. It gives you the chance to explain why you are suited to the role, something a resume alone cannot convey.
In Malaysia, application letters are still expected for positions in the public sector, statutory bodies, educational institutions and many private companies, whether submitted in print, by email or through a job portal. For government posts, applications are usually made through the official systems such as SPA, but an application letter remains relevant for contract positions and direct applications to agencies.
A good application letter states the position applied for and where you saw the advertisement, your academic qualifications, relevant work experience, the skills that match the job requirements, and why you are interested in the organisation. Keep it to one page, use a confident but courteous tone, and list the documents enclosed such as your resume, copies of certificates and identification. Proofread the spelling and the company name carefully before sending.
